John was born in Oldham in 1897. It's quite difficult to pinpoint exactly who he is in the 1901 and 1911 censuses so if you have further information please get in touch. He had a sister, Catherine.
Before enlisting in Royton in July 1915, John worked at the Vine Mill. He was sent to the Plymouth area where he underwent his basic training and then in December he joined his unit at the front. The 2nd Worcestershires had been there since August 1914.
Whilst in the trenches of that winter of 1915/1916 John came down with a sickness and in April 1916 was diagnosed with tuberculosis. He was sent back home in England and suffered until his death, at Tranmere Military Hospital in Birkenhead, on August 4th of that year. He was laid to rest three days later with full military honours at nearby Bebington Cemetery.
