HMS Abdiel

Kenneth Butterworth was born in Royton in 1918 to parents George & Agnes. He had older siblings Lena & Albert who appear on the 1911 census. Other possible siblings are Jim,Ethel,Harriet,Henry&Thomas. Please contact if you have any further details.
Kenneth served on the HMS Abdiel, a fast minelayer. Her speed also meant she was also used as a fast troop transport.
On September 8th 1943 the Italian surrender was announced, that same day the Abdiel was sent to take paratroops to the port of Taranto. Just hours before she got there on the 9th, two German torpedo boats - the S-54 & S-61 left the harbour but not before laying mines on the way out. Shortly after midnight, two of these mines detonated beneath Abdiel and the minelayer sank in three minutes with great loss of life among both sailors and soldiers. The Airborne Division lost 58 dead and around 150 injured and 48 ship's crew were lost, including Kenneth Butterworth. There are controversial, unconfirmed, reports that the ship's degaussing equipment had been turned off to reduce noise and to allow troops to sleep better.
Those from the crew of the Abdiel who died were:
