Walter Bethel was born in early 1899 in Wellington,Shropshire. It's possible he was born in the workhouse there, he definitely spent his early years there anyway. At some point before the 1911 census his mother,Fanny, moved to Royton to work in the cotton industry bringing with her Walter and his older sister Beatrice. Walter worked as a piecer.
Upon joining the army,Walter was sent to train back in his home county of Shropshire.Whilst at the Prees Heath training camp he contracted influenza and sadly died. There are a spate of 18 year olds dying during that March who are also buried at Tilstock, perhaps there was something of an outbreak at that time.
