William Attley was born in Oldham in 1919, the son of William and Florence. At the time of 1911 census William snr was an Iron Grinder. William was the younger brother of Florence,Marian,Edith & Thomas. At the time of William jnr writing his will the family were living at 72 Oldham Road.
William joined one of the two local Tank units, the 41st RTR, and found himself serving alongside many other local men in Egypt. He was tragically killed in an accident away from the front line on August 20th 1942, he dived into a pool of water & broke his neck. In his will he left the money in his Post Office savings account to his mother and everything else went to a girlfriend,Eva Simpson from Harrogate.
